76% of people have a smoke detector at home. You too? As of July 1, 2022, smoke alarms are mandatory in every home. This requirement has existed since 2003 for new construction homes, but the new legislation states that existing homes must also have a smoke detector on every floor. We talk about the rules and possible solutions.
The government has therefore amended the Building Code to require smoke detectors for both new construction and existing construction. In doing so, they are heeding the advice of the Netherlands Fire Service and municipalities, among others, to make smoke alarms mandatory for every home in the Netherlands. July 1, 2022, was chosen to give homeowners enough time to prepare for the updated rules. AND to avoid having too few detectors available from suppliers. Because the obligation is estimated to require the purchase of millions of new ones. This requirement has existed since 2003 for new construction homes, but under the new legislation, existing homes must also have a smoke detector on every floor. This applies to occupied spaces as well as enclosed spaces through which an escape route passes.
